MAMo Wearable Art Show 2023

(Text from Pa‘i Foundation)

MAMo Wearable Art Show is neither a fashion show alone nor just an art exhibit, rather it can be seen as a mixture of both! This one-night event provides a platform for Native Hawaiian artists to exhibit their wearable art creations on an elegant runway. MAMo Wearable Art Show is a key segment, to our Maoli Arts Movement, a program which celebrates and uplifts Native Hawaiian art, artists and culture. Throughout the years, artists continue to broaden the definitions of wearable art by creating pieces never seen before! Our MAMo runway is also often seen as a gateway for artists to reveal new collections for their brands.

Hālua Hula Ka No‘eau joined MAMo as “TEAM KA NO‘EAU”

TEAM KA NO‘EAU is made up of members and associates of Hālau Hula Ka No‘eau. Under the direction of Kumu Hula Michael Pili Pang, these artists began their craft as a haumana of hula.

First learning the basics of sewing a flower lei, binding feathers, crafting instruments, and acquiring skills to make other adornments needed for hula, they have followed in the shadow

of their kumu mastering the inherent arts of hula through dedication, creativity, and innovation.

Tonight, TEAM KA NO‘EAU’s contributing artists are: pupu shells by Jean Hayashi and Keali’i Hanohano, kukui jewels by Hulali Canite-Miyashiro, instruments crafted by Jen Wood and

Hanalei Klein, feather designs by Hokuloa Fortuna, make-up and hair by Monica Lindsey and Nicole Collins, hats by RYP, and tailored designs by Michael Pili Pang. With one foot rooted in the past they are challenging themselves to define What is Wearable Art. A showcase of artistic experience and Traditional Ingenuity.
