PAʻI Foundation announces a new collaboration with Nā Kumu Hula Vicky Holt Takamine, Robert Uluwehi Cazimero, and Michael Pili Pang.

I Leʻa Ka Hula: Celebrating Culture, Preserving Traditions will provide residents and visitors interested in hula and Hawaiian cultural practices opportunities to:

  • Learn from some of Hawaiʻi’s finest Kumu Hula (master teachers of hula) and cultural practitioners

  • Gain a better understanding of the mele (songs/chants)

  • Connect the mele with the natural and cultural resources, people and places that inspire the compositions

  • Increase their understanding and use of Hawaiian language

NOVEMBER 19 - 20, 2019

Pre-Conference Huakaʻi & Cultural EventsHuakaʻi (guided excursions) prior to the Conference - Choose from:

- TUESDAY AND WEDNESDAY, November 19/20th - 9-1pm

Make your own ʻulīʻulī (feathered rattling gourd) with Kawika Lum-Nelmida (two day workshop).

- TUESDAY, November 19th - 5 pm - 8 pm

Make your own lauhala hydroflask cover.

-WEDNESDAY, November 20th - 9:30 am to 12 noon

Visit the Mānoa Heritage Center Hawaiian Gardens and Kūkaʻōʻō Heiau.

- WEDNESDAY, November 20th - 12:45 PM

A guided waʻa (canoe) ride to Mokauea Island for a huakaʻi to one of Oʻahu's historical sites that houses a Native Hawaiian fishing village. Learn the historical significance of the island with Kēhaulani Kupihea and Vicky Holt Takamine.

NOVEMBER 21-23, 2019

Hula Workshops at the Blaisdell Center Exhibition Hall - Hawai'i Suites-Hula and Oli workshops with some of Hawaiʻi's finest kumu hula.

-Cultural classes with Native Hawaiian cultural practitioners.

-Hawaiian Choral Singing with Nola Nāhulu & Justin Kaupu

NOVEMBER 22 - 23, 2019

Kani Ka Pila at PAʻAKAI Marketplace, SALT @ our Kakaʻako-Kani Ka Pila (play music) with some of Hawaiʻiʻs finest musicians and hālau hula

-Arts market featuring Native Hawaiian and local artists and cultural practitioners

-Mea ʻai and mea inu (food and drinks) for purchase

NOVEMBER 24, 2019.

5pm - 9pm Ho'olaule'a at Helumoa, Royal Hawaiian Center, Waikiki-Arts market featuring Native Hawaiian and local artists and cultural practitioners

-Kani Ka Pila (play music) with some of Hawaiʻiʻs finest musicians and hālau hula

-Hōʻike (showcase), I Leʻa ka Hula participant showcase
